Allatoona High this week was named a 2013 Georgia Advanced Placement Honor School.

The Acworth school was designated an AP Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) School because students tested in at least two AP math courses and two AP science courses.

Three other North and West Cobb-area high schools received multiple honors. Like Allatoona, Harrison, Kennesaw Mountain and North Cobb were designated AP STEM Schools. But they were also named AP STEM Achievement Schools because at least 40 percent of the exam scores on AP math and science exams were at least a three.

Students can earn college credit with scores of three or higher on AP subject tests. A five is the highest possible score.

Additionally, Harrison, Kennesaw Mountain and North Cobb were named AP Merit Schools because at least 20 percent of the student body at each school took AP exams and at least half of all AP exams received scores of at least a three.

In all, 15 Cobb County high schools received a state AP Honor Schools designation.

"These recognitions affirm the District’s decade-long focus on expanding access to challenging Advanced Placement courses," Cobb County School District spokesman Jay Dillon wrote in a news release.
