Updated: 2011 Acworth Election Results

Bob Weatherford wins contested race for Alderman Post 3, while voters say "Yes" to Sunday Alcohol Sales.

The Basics:

Updated 9:10 p.m.

Bob Weatherford says he's "feeling good about winning the race, but is glad it's over." Weatherford says he's looking forward to the next four years, and speaks highly of his opponent Brett North.

"If I had lost, I'd still be happy for Brett," said Weatherford. "I don't think I'd be able to say the same thing about any other competitor, Brett is a great guy."

Brett North says he is disappointed about the results, but he will go to bed tonight with "nothing to be ashamed of" because of a race ran with "honor and integrity."

“The competition was strong and we knew it would be," said North. "I will take what I have learned here and use it in the future. We will come back and try again another time."

North says he has always respected Weatherford's work and service as a public servant.

“I personally thank him for his service to our city and his service to our nation in the armed forces," said North. "This was never about me running against Bob, it was about giving the voters of Acworth a choice."

Updated 8:23 p.m.

The City of Acworth is one of the only two Cobb cities holding its municipal elections through the city, and not the county. City Manager Brian Bulthuis said this helps save money by having just one precinct and exempting from election fees charged by Cobb County Board of Elections.

Updated 8:15 p.m.

Acworth voters said "Yes" to Sunday Alcohol Sales within the city limits.

699 voted "Yes", while 260 voted "No".

A total number of 968 voters participated in this year's municipal elections—out of 11,874 registered voters in Acworth, which makes up a 8.15 percent voter turnout.

8 p.m.

As of 7:40 p.m., votes on Sunday Alcohol Sales in today's elections are still being counted. Meanwhile, the results for Alderman Post 3 contested race is out, and it was a close one:

Bob Weatherford: 469

Brett North: 427

That means Bob Weatherford will serve another term on the Acworth City Council as the Post 3 Alderman.

Stay tuned as we bring in the latest results from the pollling precinct at Roberts School.

What are your thoughts on the elections? What about the fact that only 8.15% of registered voters actually voted? Tell us in the comments.

I found it interesting that 968 people cast ballots, but only 896 voted for either Bob Weatherford or Brett North-- in other words, 72 (7.4% of the voters) either wrote in someone else or didn't vote for either candidate. Likewise, nine (of the 968) people voted, but didn't cast a vote for or against Sunday alcohol sales.
I think only having a little over 8% of registered voters actually going to the polls is sad. I thought we had more civic minded citizens in Acworth than that.

Vince, you're right, the turnout is definitely not impressive. And we were just talking at the polling place about how interesting that some would skip those items, you would think that everyone would cast a vote on the Sunday alcohol sales.

Many people have Acworth addresses, but only those living in City get to vote....kind of a shame, since so many of the City of Acworth's actions impact those in the immediate community....whether city or county. Especially annexation......right now I'm surrounded by Acworth City limits, although it's against GA law to create an island.........but oh well..........I live on/in one!! Not a happy camper!!
