Gingrey Opposes Fiscal Cliff Deal

"It did not address spending, entitlement or tax reform in any meaningful way," he said on his Facebook page this afternoon.

Rep. Phil Gingrey (R-Marietta), whose district includes Acworth, voted against the fiscal cliff deal that Congress approved late Tuesday.

"I opposed the Senate amendment regarding the fiscal cliff because it did not address spending, entitlement or tax reform in any meaningful way," he said on his Facebook page this afternoon. "Furthermore, it continues Washington's habit of kicking the can down the road, fails to provide certainty for job creators or protection for small businesses."

The U.S. House of Representatives voted 257 to 167 to send the measure to President Obama's desk for his signature.

Had a deal not been reached, broad tax increases would have taken effect this month and there would have have been $110 billion in automatic cuts to domestic and military spending, according to CNN.

The deal will protect the middle class from tax increases, extend unemployment benefits to millions and delay automatic cuts to the Pentagon and other agencies, according to the Washington Post.

While the measure protects the middle class, it raises taxes on individuals who earn more than $400,000 per year and couples who earn more than $450,000.
