Two local Girl Scouts, Mary McQuade and Madison Henry from Girl Scout Troop 2609, earned Silver Award and two proclamations for their project “Spotlight on Nurses."
The Silver Award is the highest level award a middle school Girl Scout Cadette can earn. Their project titled “Spotlight on Nurses” focuses on raising awareness of the vital role that school nurses play at local schools and supporting them through soliciting donations to help stock their school clinics.
McQuade and Henry worked closely with North Cobb High School—their future high school, and gained support and encouragement from Phillip Page, North Cobb High's Principal.
On Tuesday, March 20, the girls surprised North Cobb’s school nurse Susie Gantt with supplies, monetary donations, handmade cards and gifts that they had been collecting to help her clinic and make it well-equipped to serve the students.
This was the "kick-off" and the first step in their project where they unveiled their overall plan and explained all their hard work in getting to this point. Their plan included among many other things, two proclamations from the cities of Acworth and Kennesaw on behalf of all local school nurses, declaring May 6-12 every year as Local School Nurse Appreciation Week.
The Girl Scouts have also found local businesses that are willing to partner with North Cobb High School to help accomplish their goals and take this project even further.
