N. Cobb Christian's Perfection Spoiled

St. Francis ends the Eagles' season in the first round of the GHSA playoffs, while Mount Paran reaches Round 2.

Take your pick of which tweet summed up North Cobb Christian's stunning 65-63 home loss to St. Francis in the first round of the Georgia High School Association's Class A boys basketball playoffs Saturday night:

Perhaps North Cobb Christian, ranked No. 1 in Georgia in Class A, was looking ahead to an expected second-round game against second-ranked Whitefield, the team that knocked the Eagles out of the playoffs last year.

Perhaps the Eagles had a letdown after completing an undefeated regular season with a Region 6-A championship win over crosstown rival Mount Paran Christian.

Perhaps the regular-season schedule wasn’t rough enough to prepare the Eagles for tournament pressure.

Perhaps St. Francis played its best game of the season.

Or maybe it was just one of those nights.

All I can say is we did it,” St. Francis Coach Cabral Huff tweeted. “The players deserve all the credit. Thanks to all the fan support.”

Nigel Jackson had 23 points, 10 rebounds and five blocked shots to lead St. Francis, Huff said.

Connor Smith and Kaiser Gates each added 13 points, Score Atlanta reported.

Gotta thank the Lord for tonight's win,” Smith tweeted. “All glory goes to him.”

Whitefield, by the way, did its part to set up that 1-vs.-2 showdown, crushing Hebron Christian, 65-13, and stepping up to No. 1 in Georgia with North Cobb Christian's loss.

So now the Knights will try to beat the top-ranked team in the state twice in less than a week.

Meanwhile, Mount Paran bounced back from losing the 6-A title and defeated Wesleyan with a big comeback at home. The Eagles outscored the Wolves 17-2 in the fourth quarter en route to a 42-33 win, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution said.

Mount Paran will hit the road Wednesday for a second-round game against Athens Christian, a 71-68 winner over Hancock Central.

I think two things happened to NCCS Saturday night -- they were looking ahead to playing Whitefield this week, and St. Francis played the game of their lives...very sad to get knocked out in the first round after a perfect season...but great season anyways, guys! Just goes to show you that, on any given day...
