While most American Legion Posts have a place to call home, North Cobb Post 304 in Acworth/Kennesaw founded in 1991 has literally gone from “pillar to post” to hold their meetings, enjoy fellow veteran’s camaraderie and ideate ways to help veterans and serve the youth of their community.

The Post currently meets at the Georgia Army National Guard Armory on McCollum Parkway in Kennesaw, and boasts almost 300 members. It is fondly known around the state as “the little Post that could”—having accomplished so much with so little.

The veterans' dream for the past 21 years of having their own place to work have finally been answered. Local benefactor and philanthropist Hervey S. Ross, who's a veteran of the Army during the Korean Conflict, has stepped up to help his fellow veterans.

Ross bought property and a large building on South Main Street in Acworth and has donated the place free and clear to Post 304. The property, which is approximately one acre, and the building, formerly known as Charlie’s Original Oyster King Restaurant, is somewhere around 12,000 to 14,000 square feet.

“My military service was so inspiring to me during my time in Germany in the early 50’s that I always wanted to give something back and now, I am financially able to do that." Ross said. "I am extremely happy to give these veterans their own place to do even more.”

Post 304 Commander Ron Asby said the new facility will allow the organization better serve local veterans and youths, and that Ross' generosity is greatly appreciated. 

“The building needs massive renovations, of course, as it has been sitting idle for a couple of years," said Asby. "But with the help from Post members, the Cities of Acworth and Kennesaw, and local businesses, the Legion is up to the task of making it a showplace in the Acworth/Kennesaw community.”
