Community Corner

Your Taxes Are Paying for It, Use It

Cobb County Libraries provide more than just books.

Approximately two-thirds of Americans have a library card. With the state of the economy, libraries are seeing a surge of patrons. Our local provide much more than just books, they provide an invaluable source of information and assistance to the community.

April 15 is fast approaching, have you completed your taxes? The AARP Tax-Aide Program provides tax preparation assistance to low and moderate income families, with special attention to seniors. This program is offered on Thursdays from 10:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. at the West Cobb Regional Library. See the library website for more locations and times.

Looking for a job? The Cobb County Library System can help you with this as well. Periodically they hold workshops with the Georgia Department of Labor. They also have computers with internet access, job resources and links as well as special software to help you create or update your resume.

New to computers? The library also offers free training classes in “Computer Basics”, “Internet for Beginners” and “Basic Email”. Check the branch calendar for dates and times.

Have Special Needs or are Homebound? Our libraries also offer books on CD and tape, large-print editions, downloadable audio books, videos and DVDs with closed captioning. Books in Braille are available through Georgia Library for Accessible Services (GLASS). "Books-to-Go!" is a service that provides library materials to the elderly, disabled or homebound who participate with the Meals on Wheels program of Cobb Senior Services.

Looking for Free Entertainment? In addition to story time for children, several branches offer book clubs for all ages and film series. The West Cobb Regional Library currently offers an Anime Club for teens, a family-friendly Saturday movie matinee and will hold a film festival during Spring Break. Various children’s programs are also held throughout the year such as puppet shows, games, the summer reading program, visits from authors, craft time, and many more. Passes to the zoo and national parks are also available on a first-come-first-service for checkout.

Need Help with Homework? In addition to computers and meeting areas that are suitable for tutoring, our library provides safe online homework resources that are teacher approved.

Gone digital? Cobb Libraries allow you to “borrow” digital downloads for your e-readers and I-pods. Click “OverDrive” in the Downloads section of the library website for the catalog and instructions.

In 2009, the Cobb County Public Library Annual Report estimated that the value of a Cobb County Library Card was almost $250. Your taxes already pay for it, why not take advantage?
