Opa! Greek Festival Starts Friday

Holy Transfiguration Greek Orthodox Church will be a center of Greek food, music, culture and fun Friday through Sunday.

Cobb County’s largest cultural festival returns to Holy Transfiguration Greek Orthodox Church this weekend with the 22nd annual Marietta Greek Festival. The festival features the flavors of Greece in the food, the drink, the music, the dancing, the shopping, and the Byzantine architecture and iconography of the church itself at 3431 Trickum Rd. in Northeast Cobb. The festival runs Friday from 3 to 11 p.m., Saturday from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m., and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., rain or shine. Admission is $3, but children under age 12 are free. Admission also is free to anyone during the first three hours of the festival, from 3 to 6 p.m. Friday. And a $5 weekend pass is available if you want to come and go. Need to Know: Big Shanty Festival 2012

An expected 60,000 to 70,000 visitors will fill the streets of downtown Kennesaw this weekend for the city's 36th annual Big Shanty Festival. Festivities will include an opening parade, a flash mob performance, food vendors, more than 250 booths featuring homemade crafts, and live entertainment on two stages. The Big Shanty Festival is a collaborative effort between the city, the Kennesaw Business Association, JRM Management and an extensive team of individuals, businesses and organizations. This year's festival is presented by Superior Plumbing. As one of north Georgia's largest events, the Big Shanty Festival has grown since its humble beginnings in 1975. Thousands from Acworth and surrounding communities flocked to downtown over the weekend for Acworth's first art fest.

Historic Downtown Acworth welcomed thousands of residents from the metro Atlanta area who came to celebrate the city's first large-scale art fest. More than 120 artists showcased their work, and the family-friendly event also had activities for kids and parents. The festival was organized by Splash Festivals in partnership with the city of Acworth.

This week is your last chance to enter the Acworth Art Fest volunteer contest. There are 60 volunteer positions to fill by Wednesday, April 4. All volunteers will receive a free t-shirt, free coffee, water and snacks all day Saturday and Sunday. Acworth Art Fest is just three weeks away. More than 120 artists with colorful and whimsical handmade art will have everything from jewelry, furniture, textiles, paintings and yard art to glass creations and funky sculpture. There are 60 volunteer positions to fill by April 4. Half of these are during the Art Fest set-up shift 4:30-9 a.m., Saturday, April 14. Spring Fling Winner: Bri Martelli of Norcross

Meet amateur photographer Bri Martelli, whose photo got the most votes in the Patch Spring Fling Photo Contest.

The Patch Spring Fling Photo Contest kicked off this month to start the warm weather season right. Readers submitted more than 240 photos, the best were picked out of the bunch and then you, the readers, cast the votes to decide which Patch had the photo that best captured the spirit of springtime. It's only fitting that today, the first official day of spring, we announce the winner -- Bri Martelli of Norcross! There were more than 800 votes cast. Martelli swept the contest with 280 votes -- about 34 percent of the total votes cast. Martelli, who is married with three children, submitted two photos of her 3-year-old daughter, Rose, playing with tulips in their front yard in Historic Norcross. 'Vegas' Lucky for Strand First-Timer

We wanted to hear about your favorite Earl Smith Strand Theatre moments, but Patch's ticket giveaway proved to be a golden opportunity to visit the Marietta Square theater for the first time. More than half the people who entered the contest by posting comments across Cobb County Patches said they have never seen a show at the Strand but would love to do so.
