Ghosts, Gobblins and Vampires, Oh My!

Here are some Halloween and safety tips before your family head out for this year's trick-or-treat.

What do all of these have in common? If you said Halloween, you would be correct! Halloween is just around the corner. Children around the area are preparing by choosing their costumes, planning their routes and picking out the largest thing they can carry to store the mass amounts of candy they will be trying to get this year.

I usually stay behind the scenes and hand out candy to the princesses and spongebobs that come to the front door. I have a method of what candy to give out to what age group. Chocolate to the older bunch (6 and over) but if I have little gobblins that come by who are under the age of 6, I hand out the suckers that have the loop as the stem.

I do not say this to scare anyone, but when it comes to candy, you do have to be careful. In the 70s and 80s there was a increasing number of rumors that people were inserting razors into apples and giving them out to children. Out of the rumors, only one occurrence was reported and it happened to be an act of premeditated murder of a trick-or-treaters' father. So other than major stomach aches and probably a few trips to the dentist, trick-or-treating is relatively safe.

There are just a few things that I would like you to be aware of while you are escorting your children around this year.

1. Check your child's candy when you get home. Normally kids like to get into their stash as soon as they hit the door and hid it so that they only have access to it (I know I used to do it). Just explain to your child that you want to check the candy to make sure that there are no unwrapped pieces. If there is any sign of tampering, the best thing to do is just to throw it out. So if that means going through the king size pillow case, then that's what will happen.

2. Drivers, please be mindful and slow down while driving through subdivisions or apartment complexes. There will be tons of little ones out there, and we certainly do not need a trip to the hospital on Halloween do we?

Those are the two most important things that I wanted to press upon everyone. Halloween can be fun, but we also must be safe while trick or treating.

Have fun, be safe, and I look forward to seeing everyone dressed up this year!
