Chattahoochee Tech Opens Renovated Library at North Metro Campus

(Acworth, Ga. – Dec. 12, 2013) Chattahoochee Technical College students, faculty and staff were joined by community members and supporters Thursday to officially open the new library at the college’s North Metro Campus. Construction has been ongoing on the newly renovated 5,277 square foot facility that is more than double the size of the original library that opened in 1989.

“When all these buildings and facilities were constructed, they were done so with a much smaller student body in mind,” explained Vice President for Facilities David Simmons. “We are addressing the need for more space, but also the diverse technological demands of today.”

Construction consisted of an addition to the existing 2,400 square feet of library space, plus a mezzanine study area. The final design also includes a circulation desk, librarian office, workroom, computer carrels and two study rooms for small groups.  The renovations doubled of the number of computers, as well as the study space available originally. The $834,271 contract for the project went to Prime Construction.

“The most interesting feature is that it will feature a mezzanine or loft for students to use for reading, studying, or working on group projects with classmates,” Chattahoochee Technical College Director for Libraries Barbe Moore said. “While the building is only one story, the angled ceiling design is allowing the space to be built out as a mezzanine area.”

“These updates and additions are necessary to continue providing the best environment and education to students,” said Chattahoochee Technical College President Dr. Ron Newcomb. “The work places of this community are continually changing and requiring that we meet those changes with updates to facilities and technology for the future workforce.”
