Acworth Girl, Cancer Patient Sings "Cups" (Video)

Diagnosed with osteosarcoma last year when she was 11 years old, Mary Tankersly is helping to raise awareness of childhood cancer.

An Acworth girl who had a rare surgery to treat cancer performs in a film recently made to raise awareness of the need for funding for pediatric cancer research.

Mary Tankersley, 12, of Acworth who was diagnosed with osteosarcoma late last year, according to her CaringBridge.org page, sings Cups, a song made popular by the film Pitch Perfect in the Truth 365 video, according to 11 Alive, which profiled Tankersly back in March.

Then 11 years old, Tankersley has since undergone rotationplasty, "which involved removing [her] cancerous knee and reattaching [her] healthy lower leg backwards so that the ankle acts as the new knee," according to Truth 365.

The volunteer project aims to educate and mobilize millions through social media sites with films relaying the personal stories of children fighting cancer, according to http://www.thetruth365.org.

Tankersley is still undergoing treatment, including chemo, according to her CaringBridge journal.

"As Bailey said in her interview, 'No one should have cancer, but especially not children,'" the Tankersleys wrote in a July 11 entry. "Childhood cancer is severely underfunded and is not a priority to the U.S. government or the American Cancer Society. The stories and pictures shared by Truth 365 move us and remind us of that need."
