Acworth residents Scott and Sara Powell started their journey with The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Team In Training (TNT) by hiking through the Grand Canyon in 2007. They wanted to do something outdoors and the hike sounded like fun. TNT’s mission and its inspiration were an unexpected surprise. The people Scott and Sara met were such good people that went out of their way for a great cause.
Together, Scott and Sara have completed nine events with Team in Training as participants or mentors. They got engaged on the 2008 TNT Rocky Mountain Hike in Colorado. Last year, Scott and Sara were members of the TNT Yosemite Hike in the western Sierra Nevada Mountains of California.
Scott and Sara estimate that they have raised $29,000 for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society in all of their events. With over $1.32 billion raised since 1988, TNT athletes are contributing to The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's goal of one day finding cures for blood cancers.
When asked what drives her, Sara states, “I absolutely love the cause and the lifelong friendships I have made. I love donating my time and efforts to such a giving organization.” Scott shares a story where a stranger who saw him wearing a TNT shirt unexpectedly thanked him. Her daughter had struggled with leukemia but was now in remission. The mother was so appreciative of his efforts, and all of those in Team In Training, to help families like hers. “It’s moments like those that remind me of why I participate. Team In Training is greater than any one participant and its cause helps so many.”
For 2013, Scott and Sara plan to once again go with Team In Training to Colorado and hike in the Rocky Mountain National Park.
