Every 45 seconds, a child in Africa dies from malaria, but St. Teresa's Episcopal Church in Acworth is hoping to change that.

The church is sponsoring Operation: Nets for Life, a campaign to raise money for purchasing cost effective mosquito nets, said campaign spokeswoman Sally Plummer.

“Here in Acworth, when we put our kids to bed, we don’t give a second thought to their safety. They’re in our houses, they’re safe and sound,” said Plummer.

“Unfortunately, parents in Africa don’t have that same sense of security because they know their child is just one night’s sleep away from getting a malaria-infected mosquito bite.”

Unlike in America, African residences are often open, with no screens on the windows or doors, so the mosquitoes enjoy easy access to their victims, Plummer said. The mosquito nets provided by Nets for Life are large and can cover the whole family in the sleeping area.

The Nets for Life campaign at St. Teresa's is part of a combined effort by all 96 Episcopal churches in north and middle Georgia and a nationwide campaign by all U.S. Episcopal churches to build awareness about malaria and how it can be prevented.
