Keepin' It Southern

Minding our manners is the thing to do at consignment sales.

Few things are more Southern than spending a beautiful Saturday morning shopping church consignment sales and enjoying a fabulous hot-plate lunch. The thrill of a good bargain, the smell of the food and the warm smiles of the workers add to the charm. Unfortunately, some of us seem to have forgotten our Southern hospitality and good graces.

Even if you are not a follower of Christianity, it is hard to begrudge any organization that is striving to earn money to feed the hungry, provide scholarships for children or send relief to tsunami victims. Please remember the good that will come from the proceeds and rein in any “attitude.” These sales are run mostly by volunteers, some of whom take off from work to assist.

Shoppers, please treat others the way in which you would like to be treated. Many consignment sales do not offer credit card options. This incurs additional cost to the church and cuts into the designated mission funds. Please have cash or check ready, and do not gripe if asked for your driver’s license. Prices are set by the seller in most cases, so please do not dicker over the price of a $1 shirt. Many churches offer half-prices on Saturday. If a particular item is not marked half-price, do not cuss the register volunteer and storm out.

If you are a seller, please remember to read the contract and follow the rules to which you have agreed. Keep in mind that a once-or-twice-a-year consignment sale is not a professional business, and expectations may need to be adjusted.

If you cannot afford to be patient when dropping off or picking up your items, then perhaps you should consider using a retail consignment shop instead. An even better solution would be to volunteer. That way, you can help speed up the checkout process and keep an eye out for shoplifters. Yes, even churches have shoplifters come through their doors.

No matter how you are involved, remember your manners. Not only is it part of the Golden Rule, but it’s also the Southern thing to do.
