DIY Roundup for Fall Nesting

A round up of crafty, low-cost tutorials that will help you bring warmth to your home decor this fall.

Every year around this time, I naturally start to daydream about making changes to our home. I guess thoughts of feathering the nest and making it warm and cozy simply go hand-in-hand with preparing for cooler weather.

If your nesting instinct has kicked in too, checkout the following round-up of tutorials from around the web for crafty and budget-friendly inspiration.

Everything’s Coming Up Ruffles

Ruffles have been a big trend in both fashion and home design for the last few years, so it’s no surprise that several crafty bloggers have created tutorials for knock-offs of high-end ruffled home accessories.  Whether you’d like to add just a small amount of the trend to your home or you want to go all out, here's a tutorial to help you:

  • Start small: If the thought of sewing ruffles scares you, you can start small by adding ruffles to some pillow cases and sheets. Ellie of the blog Homestitched has written up a detailed, step by step tutorial for making a knock-off of a lovely (and expensive) Anthropologie ruffled pillow case.
  • A little bigger: If Ellie’s tutorial isn’t ruffled enough for you, consider adding ruffles to a lampshade. There are several popular ruffled lampshade tutorials making the rounds in the blog world right now, but my favorite is from the blog Mama Says Sew. Another Anthropologie knock-off, this ruffled lampshade is created with burlap and a hot glue gun, so if sewing isn’t your forte, you’ll still be able to partake in the trend!
  • All out ruffles: For those who believe in the theory “go big or go home” you should just go for the gusto and create some ruffled curtains or a duvet (or both!). Visit the blog boy, a girl, and a pug to get the details on making $8 ruffled curtains and Made by Lex for a tutorial on a ruffled duvet.

It’s the Small Touches

If you’re short on time (or lack sewing skills, like yours truly), you can still find some small crafts to help you get your home in the fall mood:

  • Add pillows: You’ll find a tutorial on the blog Loving Life for no-sew pillows with a zipper made from cloth napkins.
  • Add a tray: Accessorize your side tables or mantle with a DIY paper mache tray and books, magazines, or other knick-knacks you already own.
  • Add flowers: These q-tip flowers or pom-pom flowers will work well in a modern/contemporary home.
  • Add glass (and candles): Candles add the warmth and glass adds sparkle, perfect for making your home feel more inviting in the cool weather.
