Storm on the Lake

This is a poem about watching a storm.

The clouds come-gripping the trees too tightly

Spreading like a disease in the sky

A haphazard wind darts nervously breathing in short puffs across the water

Pushing it sullenly to the shore of the lake that devours its rhythm

The storm comes now with heavy footsteps through the sky

Trespassing on brooding clouds bringing them to frenzied anger

Like fists hail pounds the ground and lake below

Pockmarking it and descending like bullets into the water

Colorless raindrops compete with hail following each other to their death

While excessive leaves wander aimlessly in the murky air

Denuding some of the trees, bracing themselves for their destinations

The trees do a dance of contrition offered up to the storm

Who will not forgive them today

Precarious lightning randomly stings the earth then withdraws again

In retreat like an angry spirit awakened

The guilty sky hangs it head in sorrow

As the weight of the storm has smothered out the sun

Smothered out the heart of the day

Until it is rendered helpless against the storm

Ready to receive it, ready to die in it

Ready to surrender.
