Atlanta-Area Cancer Survivors Event Set for June 21

This annual event offers a chance to meet other cancer survivors, engage in interactive workshops, learn some tips for getting back to a normal lifestyle, or just sit back and enjoy the music and companionship.

Patch Staff Report

On Saturday, June 21, Atlanta-area cancer survivors, their families and friends are invited to come celebrate their survivorship by sharing food, music, stories and workshops at the Celebration of Living event sponsored by the Winship Cancer Institute of Emory University and Saint Joseph’s Cancer Survivors' Network.

Celebration of Living is free and open to the public, and will be held from 8am to 1 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall of Peachtree Presbyterian Church on Roswell Road in Buckhead. This annual Winship event offers a chance to meet other cancer survivors, engage in interactive workshops, learn some tips for getting back to a normal lifestyle, or just sit back and enjoy the music and companionship.

This year’s event features workshops in “journaling for hope,” laughter yoga, light zumba, jewelry making, drumming for joy and many other activities.  There will be door prizes for survivors and lunch will be provided. Highlighting the morning, Laura and Susan Stachler, a mother-daughter duo, will talk about how they founded Susansnaps, a gourmet gingersnap cookie company inspired by an idea during chemotherapy.

Event organizer Mary Brookhart, part of Winship’s breast cancer multidisciplinary team and a 25-year breast cancer survivor, says the theme of this year’s celebration is “growing hope together.”

“Surviving cancer starts the moment you get diagnosed,” said Brookhart in a news release. “Our hope is that one day, all cancer patients will enjoy a lifetime of survivorship.”
