Stevi B's Pizza Helps Atlanta's Needy Kids

An Acworth business is involved in providing school supplies.

Purchasing pizza today can help Atlanta’s needy kids get much-needed school supplies this year.

restaurants are donating a portion of their proceeds to the “Kids in Need” Foundation to purchase school supplies for underprivileged children in Atlanta.

The program, coordinated through the Atlanta Community Food Bank, began in 2000 and distributes thousands of new supplies to 2,000 teachers in low-income schools across Atlanta.

To celebrate this campaign, Stevi B’s has put up 22 billboards of Atlanta kids who love “weird pizza.” The winners were chosen through a contest on Stevi B’s Facebook page.

Acworth’s winner is nine-year-old Luke Hancock, a home-schooled student who said he “loves to go to Stevi B’s to eat and play games.” Luke’s mom and dad, Michelle and Mark Hancock, said they saw the billboard contest on Facebook and decided to have Luke enter.

“You just had to submit a photo of your child who likes Stevi B’s, and I actually had a photo of Luke at the Acworth store eating pizza,” said Michelle Hancock. Luke’s favorite kind of pizza? Amazingly enough, it’s spinach and cheese. “That’s the only way I can get him to eat spinach,” his mom said.

Lois Krolikowski, a spokesman for Stevi B’s, said the “Kids in Need” program is for students whose academic success is threatened by poverty. She added there is no cost to students or teachers. There are more children in Atlanta who live in poverty than in any other state, Krolikowski said, and 48 percent of these kids live in families whose annual income is less than $15,000.

Luke’s picture can be seen on a huge billboard located on Highway 41 going south just before the Home Depot in Acworth. “When he first saw himself up there, he thought it was strange,” Michelle Hancock said. “But now he thinks it’s really neat.”
