5 Things: Military Spouse Appreciation Day, BBQ Fest at Cauble Park

Here are the things you need to know before heading out the door on May 6.

1. Weather. Mostly sunny skies are in for today, with a high temp near 75 degrees and calm wind between 5 and 10 mph, according to the National Weather Service. Winds could gust as high as 15 mph. Friday night is expected to be mostly clear, with a low temp around 45 degrees and west wind between 5 and 10 mph. The weekend forecast stays clear with highs in the low 80s.

3. Happening now. Smoke on the Lake BBQ Festival: The Rotary Club of North Cobb and the will host the Second Annual Smoke on the Lake Backyard BBQ Festival today and Saturday. It is a non-sanctioned BBQ competition open to anyone who loves to cook BBQ. The cost to enter the competition is $150. This is a chance find some of the best local BBQ in one place, and people can also enjoy a free Banks and Shane concert following the awards ceremony.

The admission is free with live music from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the Gazebo Stage. Lawn seats are free and you can purchase a table and dinner for six for $100. Smoke on the Lake is a BBQ festival for charity that raises funds for local Cobb County Charities, including the Horizon Field at the .

5. What about May 6. Today we honor the contributions and special sacrifices of spouses of members of our Armed Forces. Military Spouse Appreciation Day is celebrated on the Friday before Mother’s Day and has been observed since President Ronald Reagan made a proclamation in 1984. If you know a spouse or significant other of someone in the military, please take the time to recognize them today. This day in 1889 also marked the completion and dedication of the Eiffel Tower in Paris. On May 6, 1954, British athlete Roger Bannister became the first person to run a mile in under four minutes (3:59:4).
