5 Things: Beat the Heat

Here are the things you need to know before starting your day on July 13.

1. Weather. It is going to be a very hot day with partly sunny skies and a high near 97. There is a 40 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms in the morning, and calm wind is around 5 mph, according to the National Weather Service. Going into tonight, there is a 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, with mostly cloudy skies and a low around 74.

  • Avoid hot foods and heavy mealsβ€”they add heat to your body.
  • Drink plenty of fluids and replace salts and minerals in your body. Do not take salt tablets unless under medical supervision.
  • Dress infants and children in cool, loose clothing and shade their heads and faces with hats or an umbrella.
  • Limit sun exposure during mid-day hours and in places of potential severe exposure such as beaches.
  • Do not leave infants, children, or pets in a parked car.
  • Provide plenty of fresh water for your pets, and leave the water in a shady area.
