5 Things: National Day of Prayer Service at City Hall

Here are the things you need to know before heading out the door on May 5.

1. Weather. Areas of frost are likely before 8 a.m. with the rest of the day expected to be sunny, with a high temp near 71 degrees, according to the National Weather Service. Going into Thursday night, skies will be mostly clear, with a low temp around 44 degrees and south wind around 5 mph.

First Annual Ride to the Horizon: A motorcylcle ride benefiting "Covering the Bases" fundraiser for the special needs Horizon Field will take place on Saturday, May 14. 5. What about May 5. Today is the National Day of Prayer, an annual day of observance held on the first Thursday of May. This day is designated by the United States Congress to ask people "to turn to God in prayer and meditation". Today is also Cinco de Mayo, a Mexican holiday that commemorates the Mexican army's victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla. However, it has become a more significant holiday in the United States than in Mexico, celebrating Mexican heritage and pride. Also on this day in 1961, Alan Shepard became the first American in space. On May 4, 2004, Pablo Picasso's "Boy with a Pipe" became the most expensive painting ever sold.
