Drug Take-Back, Severe Storms Possible

Here are the things you need to know before heading out the door on April 27.

1. Weather. There is a 50 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly after 2 p.m., with the rest of the day expected to be mostly cloudy, according to the National Weather Service. High temperature is near 82 degrees, with south wind between 10 and 15 mph and gusts as high as 25 mph. Going into Wednesday night, showers and thunderstorms are expected after 8 p.m., and some of the storms could be severe, according to the NWS. Temperature will drop to around 53 degrees, with wind between 10 and 15 mph and gust as high as 20 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90 percent.

3. Happening now. The is partnering with the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) in a nationwide initiative to prevent increased prescription pill abuse and theft. Acworth police and the DEA will be collecting potentially dangerous expired, unused and unwanted prescription drugs for destruction on Saturday, April 30, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Acworth Police Department at 440 Acworth Industrial Dr. The service is free and anonymous, no questions asked.

This initiative addresses a vital public safety and health issue, since most people are not aware that medicines remain in home cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion,misuse and abuse, according to the Acworth Police Department. Unused medicine should be properly disposed, instead of being flushed down the toilet or thrown away, to prevent potential safety and health hazards.

Acworth police cannot and will not accept needles/sharps, syringes, thermometers, IV bags, bloody or infectious waste, personal care products, empty containers, inhalers, and/or medical equipment. For more information on the “Take-Back” initiative, please contact Officer Jeff Rose at 678-801-4073.
