'Jail and Bail' to Support Special Olympics

It may look like an April Fools' Day joke, but it's all for a good cause.

Being handcuffed and put behind bars is usually not an occasion someone would bring family and friends along to celebrate, but that was the case on April Fools' Day in Acworth this year.

Citizens who participated in the "Jail and Bail" fundraising event held by the were getting "arrested" to support the Georgia Special Olympics. Citizens in the area could apply for a "warrant" to have an individual "arrested" by the police and taken to "jail". The person who was getting "arrested" would be notified in advance and be given the opportunity to "post bail". They could also attempt to raise their "bail" in advance. Individuals who were not able to leave their place of business or residence, had the opportunity to "bribe" the officer who comes to "arrest" them in order to not go to jail. All proceeds will be donated to the Georgia Special Olympics Foundation.

All "arrestees" were taken to the Old Jail on Senator Russell Avenue, a historical landmark built in 1935, and used as a jail facility till 1995. The building still contains the original cells, and is maintained by the Acworth Police Department.
