Snowpocalypse Almost Coming to an End

Roadways are slowly clearing out, but cancellations continue Wednesday and beyond.

Acworth is beginning to break the grip of and has paralyzed metro Atlanta under the 4 to 5 inches of snow and ice that covered most of Cobb County by the end of Monday.

government offices will reopen at 10 a.m. today, though Cobb public schools remain closed for a third consecutive day, and evening classes at are canceled.

Although Cobb Department of Transportation crews have worked 24 hours a day, many secondary and subdivision streets remain hazardous. Initial snow-clearance efforts focused on areas around hospitals, fire stations and police precincts as well as major intersections and roadways.

Cobb Community Transit (CCT) has canceled bus service for the third consecutive day today because of the hazardous road conditions, but scheduled kidney dialysis paratransit service will continue.

Meanwhile, Tuesday's Cobb School Theatre Night at the Earl Smith Strand Theatre on Marietta Square, where and other high schools were scheduled to perform, also has been postponed.

The Cobb Board of Education has delayed its regularly scheduled Wednesday work session until Friday, with a public comment period to begin at 9:30 a.m.

The Cobb County Board of Commissioners pushed back Tuesday's meeting to next Tuesday at 10 a.m. in the board's meeting room on the second floor of 100 Cherokee St. in Marietta. A hearing on the county's comprehensive plan will precede the board meeting at 9 a.m.

Best-selling author Steve Berry's scheduled appearance Thursday at Mountain View Regional Library has been canceled; no new date has been determined.

Freezing temperatures are expected most of today and Thursday, making it more difficult for the DOT crews to clear icy roads. The Georgia Department of Transportation urges motorists to avoid travel if possible today because of the likelihood of refreezing.

While staying indoors, you can prevent pipes from freezing by wrapping them and opening cabinets to expose plumbing to warm air or by keeping a faucet on a slow drip.

The good news is no precipitation in the forecast, and the weekend could bring sunny skies with temperatures in the 4os.
