In December, the front and side doors seem to open and shut a lot more around the house with the busyness of preparing for all the holidays. Going shopping, going to parties and events, seeing holiday shows, etc. And with all that door opening, the first thing to escape (besides the contents of your wallet) is the HEAT!
How to stay warm during the Holidays
Those rare balmy days of November are nearly gone so here are a few tips to help.

1) Remind the children they must shut the door after they come in. Make it a game (or a consquence), earn a quarter at the end of the day for whoever did best (or lose a quarter everytime you catch them not shutting it all the way).
2) Keep on a sweater and socks. Sure it's more fashionable to wear light fabrics, but a little bit of layering can keep that thermostat down a degree saving you money in the long run. If you have a home office that is near a door, keep a blanket to cover your legs, that little bit of warmth will again keep you from poking the heater every couple of hours.

3) While many people praise them, it is best to use space heaters carefully. Space heaters can be very dangerous when placed near animals, children or fabrics. Never leave a space heater unattended.
4) Get your furnace serviced. Have your furnace checked for efficiency by a HVAC company professional, if your unit is not working properly, it could be running longer and therefore costing you more money. You may need a minor heating repair. Or if the life of your unit is approaching it's end, you may want to consider the new highly rated energy efficient models now on the market. They may save you big money on your gas/electric bills.
