The Acworth Police Department is once again ready to "Cover the Bases." The sixth annual fundraising event will be held Sept. 13-14 at Horizon Field.
Proceeds help fund scholarships for special needs athletes, provide equipment for participants and pays for maintenance at the only special-needs ball field in Cobb.
The Acworth Police Department has raised some $100,000 during the past five years so that hundreds of athletes can take to the field.
This year, Covering the Bases kicks off Friday night, Sept. 13, at 7 with the music of Aspen Countryman and Kaitlin Stark, with families taking to the field running and walking the bases for 24 hours.
After dark, the movie "Brave" will be on the big screen, and groups and teams can participate in the all night kickball tournament.
At 9 a.m. on Saturday, the presentation of colors by the Allatoona JROTC will be accompanied by local harmonic quartet Bald-4-Him. To kick off the fall league season at Horizon Field, former Atlanta Brave pitcher Pete Smith will throw out the first pitch. The rest of the day will be packed with family entertainment, including bounce houses, concessions, raffles and a silent auction that includes sports memorabilia and items from local merchants and vendors.
Admission to Covering the Bases is free, but donations are accepted. For more information, like the Acworth Police Department on Facebook or call Capt. Tony Bailey at 770-974-1232.
