Window Treatments to the Rescue

Choosing the right window treatments will add design and creativity to the look of your home.

Window treatments or curtains are the finishing touch that creates the “WOW” factor to complete your room. They come in the form of drapery, valances, cornice boards and “soft cornice boards."

One form of window treatment is the long drapery panel. They are not just for keeping the cold out in the winter time anymore, even though it is good to save money and “go green” by using insulated or interlined drapery panels to keep in the heat.

The top section of drapery panels come in a variety of styles that add color, beauty and personality to your room. Tall draperies also help you show off how tall the walls are in your home. Another positive aspect to selecting drapery panels for your window treatment is that they create the illusion that your windows are horizontally larger than they really are.

If you install them six inches further over than the molding on each side of the window, onto the drywall, it will make the window appear larger. This technique allows most of the window to show so more sunlight will be able to enter into the room.

Most homes have box or rectangle shapes in them like the shape of a couch, end table or cupboards. Regardless of the decorating style you choose; only having square or rectangle shapes in your home does not add much interest or character.

Window treatment valances can come to the rescue! Choosing a valance with a curve shape on the bottom or a curve within the valance will add interest, design and creativity to the look of your windows and your home!

The soothing curve shape will help you break up the square shapes throughout the house. You can combine valances and draperies together to give the illusion of a taller and wider window. When you install your valance make sure it is installed higher than the top of the (horizontal) molding to allow the sunlight to come into the room.

Clients have told me many times that they had no idea that window treatments would have such an impact on their walls. Custom-made window treatments add more personality than any other kind of window treatments because they promote your decorating style and your color palette.

However, sometimes custom-made window treatments are not in the budget. If that is the case, I have a window treatment or curtain solution for you. You can add color and a “WOW” factor by using “No-Sewing” window treatments. These window treatments are very simple to do and if done correctly can look like custom made window treatments.

There are a huge variety of “No-Sewing” window treatment styles for you to choose from. Properly chosen fabric promotes your color palette, adds personality and helps your home feel beautiful and inviting.
