Dealing with Homework Hassles

Has your child's homework become your homework?

Homework is a staple of American schooling and a hot button issue of nearly every educational reform debate. Teachers carry more and more administrative responsibilities. Class size is increasing. Mandated testing increases pressure on class time. Many teachers feel they simply must rely on homework to help students cover class objectives that cannot be completed in a school day.

Because of the faster pace and higher demands, new material is often covered so quickly that a child goes home without thoroughly understanding new concepts. This means that what was once "practice" to solidify new information has become at-home learning, thus, turning parents into teachers or tutors. At home reteaching unlocks a whole new batch of problems. "That's not how my teacher does it", being a common one. Before long, you find yourself back in grade school where your child's homework has become your homework. For many families homework takes over dinner, play time and family time.

Common reasons children are unable to complete their homework independently or in a reasonable amount of time are: inattentiveness, low comprehension, and poor memory. All of which are skills dramatically improved by brain training.
