Love to Read?

Reading with your child—is it painful or one of the best parts of your day?

I've heard it more times than I can count when it comes to reading with your kids:

"Reading with my child is almost painful!"

"What should take 20 minutes can take up to 2 hours!"

"She comes to a word she doesn't know and two lines later the word shows up again and we're decoding it AGAIN!"

"I LOVE to read and it makes me sad that my child absolutely hates to read."

Unfortunately this is all too common, especially since 44% of American 4th grade students cannot read fluently. I've been there—I taught here in Cobb County under a phenomenal administration team and an incredible teaching staff. Even the best educators had students in their classrooms that struggled with reading. I have long said that if I were to go back into the classroom as a teacher, I would have an entirely different perspective after my work here at .

I've learned first hand what it is like for students to struggle with reading; kids who have told me with tears in their eyes just how fearful they are of being called on to read in class. What I know now is that there is a solution. There's a way to train your child's brain to read and process information faster and much, much easier.

Check out this great interview on reading and the brain with Dr. Sally Shaywitz, an expert in dyslexia as she shares her expertise as a neuroscientist and pediatrician. Take a survey here to see how your child's cognitive skills stack up.

LearningRx has recently partnered with www.bookshare.org to offer free book downloads to our students with reading difficulties, like dyslexia. A Story Before Bed is a great way to read and record a story with your child (great for the parent who travels).
