New Year, New Start

It's a new year full of hope and expectations for you and your child. Help make this year the best yet!

2012. I love the start to a new year. Especially an even year. There's something uplifting and hopeful, and I feel it more this year than ever before.

My kindergartener hopped on the bus last week excited about getting back to school. My husband and I both were excited to get back into a routine after weeks of lazy mornings and too much food (too much chocolate, really). My preschoolers have no idea a change has happened, but it's fun to see their perpetual excitement anyway. There is something to just getting back into the swing of things with the hope that this year is going to be better than the last.

Parents and teachers alike often share this same sentiment about their children and students. Maybe school work will all start to "click" after the winter break. Maybe the struggles will subside once she turns 10 (or 12, or 15). Maybe these CRCT scores will be better and we won't have to worry about the possibility of summer school or repeating this school year. Maybe.

Wouldn't it be great if our kids had the same hopeful feeling that we adults feel at the start to a new year when they return to school after a break or at the start to a new school year? What if their goals or resolutions were actively coming to fruition?

My heart hurts when families share stories of their child giving up hope—both in themselves and in school. We want the absolute best for our children, right? We want them to have the roots we give them and grow wings along the way so they are fully prepared to live their best life.

If your child, or someone you know, is having a hard time realizing academic or personal goals, it may be caused by a weak cognitive skill. You can take a three-minute questionnaire here that will help you start to pinpoint the cause.
