Parents and School Conferences

School conferences for my son's school are underway this week, and as a kindergartner's mom, I shouldn't be too worried, right?

I'm the mom of a sweet, naive and active kindergartner. It seems like just yesterday when he was born, and this year I put him on the bus and sent him to big kid school. I didn't worry too much about sending him off to school this year as I felt like he was really ready to be in school. He did great in Pre-K and as the first born, I pretty much felt like whatever he was doing was above average anyway. Well, there's always some concern that maybe he's behind, but reassurances from friends and family can quickly get that worry out of my mind—sort of.

But here we are. Conference week. I still have the worry—what if he's not up to par? What if he is struggling and I didn't know it? He did tell me that the other day he had to spend most of recess working on a "project" that he didn't finish earlier in the day. What? All I could do was to not panic and email his teacher wondering if this is a trend. No, I'll just wait until Conference Week to find out.

I did find a cool site the other day that outlines what kindergartners should be expected to do; you can check it out here. I own a brain training company here in the Kennesaw/Acworth area, and have been thinking about my kid's brain since he was in the womb. Still, I can be as knowledgeable as possible in my field, but when it comes to my own kids, it seems to be more difficult to see objectively.

I guess I'll have to wait until the conference to find out the "real" scoop. Wish me luck.
