Acworth To Eye Island Annexations, Build New Police Department

The mayor and board of aldermen will hold a special, called meeting tonight at 6:30.

The fastest-growing Cobb County city is looking to grow, again.

Mayor Tommy Allgood and the Board of Aldermen are holding a special called meeting tonight at 6:30 to discuss island annexations, a previous round of which brought oppositon from a handful of residents.

City leaders this month also made took the first step in construction of a new Acworth Police Department building, considering contracting pre-construction services and hiring a construction manager, according to the agenda, attached.

Set for the same 4400 Industrial Park Drive facility, the new, two-story police department, at 22,000-square-feet, will drawf the existing facility, which is 5,000 square feet and houses 54 employees, the Marietta Daily Journal reports.

The $3.8 million price tag will be funded with Special Purpose Local Option Sales Taxes approved by voters in 2011.

Acworth grew 52.2 percent between April 2000 and April 2010, far outpacing both Cobb County and Georgia as a whole, according to the U.S. Census Bureau's official 2010 count.
