Holiday Shopping Safety Tips

Shopping during the holiday season can present unique danger. Acworth police would like you to take a few prevention measures while shopping.

The holiday season is a time when busy people can become careless and vulnerable to theft and other holiday crime. The following tips from the can help you reduce the risk of being a victim of crime during the holiday season.

  • Shop during daylight hours whenever possible. If you must shop at night, go with a friend or family member.
  • Avoid wearing expensive jewelry.
  • Do not carry a purse or wallet, if possible. They are the prime targets of criminals in crowded shopping areas, transportation terminals, bus stops, buses and other transit.
  • Always carry your driver's license or identification card, along with only the necessary cash, checks or credit card you expect to use.
  • Park in well-lighted spaces near main entrances and exits. Report loitering or suspicious activity you see in shopping center parking lots. ο»Ώ
  • Pay for purchases with a check or credit card when possible.
  • Keep cash in your front pocket.Β 
  • Purchase higher-priced items, such as electronics, at the end of your shopping session so you will not have to make other stops before going home.
  • Unload your vehicle immediately of such items as flat-screen televisions and computers. Don't dispose of the boxes right outside your door or in the yard.
  • Even though you are rushed and thinking about a thousand things, stay alert to your surroundings.
  • Don't place a purse in a shopping cart; wear your handbag across your body. ο»Ώ
  • Avoid overloading yourself with packages. It is important to have clear visibility and freedom of motion to avoid mishaps.
  • Beware of strangers approaching you for any reason. At this time of year, con artists will try various methods of distracting you with the intention of taking your money or belongings.
