Man Allegedly Presented Forged Prescription at Acworth Drug Store

He faces a charge of obtaining a controlled substance by misrepresentation.

A Cartersville man surrendered to Cobb authorities Friday, more than two weeks after he allegedly presented a forged prescription for 90 Percocet pills at an Acworth drug store.

About 11:30 a.m. April 11, Stephen Curtis Chapman went to Lacey Drug Co.

"Accused presented his Georgia driver’s license to the pharmacy so that a patient profile could be completed," according to a Cobb County criminal warrant. "The pharmacy attempted to verify the prescription by calling the prescribing facility, labeled on the prescription."

No one answered the call. And before Dr. James A. Sexson returned the drug store's call, the prescription was filled, records show. Chapman allegedly paid cash.

When Sexson did call Lacey Drug Co. back, "it was discovered the prescription was not valid and was in fact forged," according to the warrant. On April 19, "accused contacted said (the Acworth police officer) by phone and admitted to taking prescriptions from Dr. Sexson’s office while helping the office move approximately 1 month prior to this date. Accused also admitted to filling the prescription at Lacey's Pharmacy."

Chapman faces a charge of obtaining a controlled substance by misrepresentation. Percocet is a schedule II controlled substance.

He was released Saturday from the Cobb County Adult Detention Center on a $10,000 bond.
