Man Nearly Drowns at Acworth Beach

The Marietta man who went under at Old Highway 41 Day Use Area No. 1 was airlifted to Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta.

A Cobb County man nearly drown Saturday at an Acworth day use area beach and was airlifted to an Atlanta hospital as a result.

Shortly before 4:30 p.m., emergency crews were called to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineer's Old Highway 41 Day Use Area No. 1 where the 51-year-old man was sitting up, but not very coherent and not responsive to questions, according to the Bartow County Sheriff's Office incident report.

A woman told police the victim was drunk and went swimming at the beach and disappeared under water for about 2 minutes before anyone noticed.

Swimmers nearby found the victim, and a man on shore rushed into to help pull him out of the water and started CPR. The man who nearly drown was unconscious and not breathing, according to the woman.

The man who began CPR said he could hear gurgling in the victim's lungs.

He was airlifted from the day use area to Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta for treatment, according to the report.
