Acworth Backs Off Annexation Plans

The annexation was to take effect June 1, but there were some residents who were opposed to the idea.

Acworth Mayor Tommy Allegood and the Board of Alderman Tuesday night rescinded a proposal to bring portions of unincorporated Cobb County into the city limits.

Currently, the unincorporated pocket along Hickory Grove Road and New McEver Road confuses emergency responders and road maintenance crews, city officials said. Annexation was supposed to help those emergency responders and road maintenance crews better deliver services to the area, City Manager Brian Bulthuis told the Marietta Daily Journal earlier this month.

The annexation was to take effect June 1, but there were some residents who were opposed to the idea before the board approved the proposal on May 2. Those concerns prompted Tuesday night's reversal, according to the MDJ.

"There were about (a) half dozen people who came to the meeting...not really a lot of opposition," Mayor Tommy Allgood told Patch via email.

But city officials also withdrew a petition to annex 66 properties on Acworth Due West Road, Nance Road, South Main Street and Blue Springs Road. That proposal was to be considered during the planning and zoning commission meeting later Tuesday night, according to the MDJ.
