Christmas Carolers, Dancers Recognized

It really was a "Dickens of a Christmas" this past holiday season.

Organizers and participants of a Charles Dickens inspired Christmas flash mob and choral event were recognized by the Mayor and Board of Aldermen at their meeting Thursday evening.

Last winter's took over downtown Acworth for a few days of yuletide merriment and events centered around the Charles Dickens classic “A Christmas Carol.” Carolers sang their way from historic home to historic home, and even jolly St. Nick and wife found time in their busy schedules to pay Acworth a visit.

Many of the carolers, who attend  and Mount Paran Christian School, attended the meeting and performed an impromptu rendition of “Jingle Bells” for the mayor and aldermen.

“We just wanted to thank everybody that helped us with this event,” said Acworth Downtown Development Authority (DDA) Treasurer Suzi Riedling. “This was a very challenging thing for the first year, so we really didn't know which way we were heading. We had so many good people helping us.”

The mayor and board also recognized Emily Harper, a program assistant at the Cobb County Cooperative Extension run by the .

Harper received a proclamation that recognized January as Radon Action Month. Radon is a radioactive gas that is both colorless and odorless. It is the second leading cause of cancer behind smoking. Radon can accumulate inside homes without the occupants ever being aware of it.

During Radon Action Month, people who contact the Cobb County Cooperative Extension will be given free Radon testing kits. Harper passed out such kits to the mayor and aldermen during the meeting.

Before the council went into executive session to discuss personnel issues, they unanimously passed the consent agenda. Notable items on the agenda include:

  • An alcohol privilege license has been issued to the Stop 'n' Shop at 4379 S. Main St.
  • ArborMaster has been given permission to teach three classes at , or . Classes will be a Level 1 Precision Felling, Chainsaw Handling, Safety and Ergonomics class on Dec. 4-5, a Level 1 Tree Climbing Methods, Work Positioning and Best Practices class on Dec. 6-8, and a Level 1 Arborist Rigging Applications class on Dec. 10-11.
  • will be the site of the 1k, 3k and 5k Open Water Swimming Championships of the Georgia State Games Commission. The championships will be held on July 14.
  • The second annual will be held at Cauble Park on May 11 and 12. It has been designated as a community festival.
