City Council Looks to Continue Senior Living Development

If approved, Moon Street will be transferred to the Marietta Housing Authority for its new senior living complex.

The Acworth City Council will consider deeding a road adjacent to a new senior living complex to the Marietta Housing Authority (MHA) during their regularly scheduled meeting on Thursday.

Moon Street and Moon Place are subject to "closure and abandonment" due to their proximity to parcels of land owned by the MHA. The housing authority plans to build a four story, 100-apartment senior living facility on the site, similar to the MHA facility on Carruth Street.

In 2013, the City of Acworth acquired the land directly adjacent to Moon Street and Moon Place, the former site of the Moon Street Homes. The parcels were rezoned to "Senior Living Community" and intended to merge with the MHA properties nearby for the creation of a larger complex.

According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, if Moon Street is given to the MHA, it will become a private road, but the public would still have access to it.

Before the city council approves or denies the closure of Moon Street and Moon Place, a public hearing will take place to discuss the decision. The public hearing will begin at 7:00 p.m. at Acworth City Hall.

Once the Moon Street and Moon Place public hearings are ended, the city council will look to approve the consent agenda, which includes the abandonment of the two roads and several other items of interest, including awarding a one-year contract extension of $73,000 to RGS Landscaping Management LLC for right-of-way and cemetery mowing. A retiring Acworth Police Department K-9 officer will also be transferred to the permanent ownership of his handler.
