City Council to Revise Budget

Two liquor licenses and Confederate History and Heritage Month also are on the agenda tonight.

Alcohol licenses, the National Day of Prayer and a discussion to amend the fiscal 2011 budget are on the docket for tonight's meeting of the .

Before the council votes on the consent agenda, Mayor Tommy Allegood will read a proclamation declaring April Confederate History and Heritage Month. Next month marks the 150th anniversary of the start of the Civil War, which looms large in Acworth's history: The town, then called Little Shanty (to Kennesaw's Big Shanty), was put to the torch by Gen. William Sherman during his March to the Sea in 1864.

The will make two presentations. One will go to the 2010 Officer of the Year. The other will honor Brandon Harris and Dewayne Cain, who helped police find and rescue an elderly woman who had wrecked her car and wandered into the woods this year.

The mayor and aldermen will discuss altering the current budget, City Manager Brian Bulthuis said, to reflect the actual costs of items in the budget as opposed to projected costs.

β€œThe fiscal year runs from July 1 to June 30, so now that we have eight months of work in, we can put actual numbers in the budget,” he said.

The consent agenda contains the following items:

  • An alcohol license for beer, wine, liquor and Sunday sales for . A hearing on the license is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. in Conference Room 1 at .

  • An alcohol license for package sales for Creekside Exxon Market at 3140 Cobb Parkway, Suite 30. A hearing will be held during the 6:30 p.m. session.

  • The National Day of Prayer event will be held Thursday, May 5, from noon to 1 p.m. in front of City Hall.

  • The city will deny the claim of Kendall Becker against the city. Becker fell into a hole left by a sidewalk slab removed in the course of renovations and filed a claim against the city. The city is denying that claim on the grounds that the development company had not returned the sidewalk to the city's control, so the city cannot be at fault.

  • Boy Scout Troop 703 will be use on April 29 and 30 for a Rank Advancement Campout.

  • The Mastercraft Professional Wakeboard Tour Block Party, which will be held at Dallas Landing Park on May 21 from 8 a.m. to midnight, will be designated a community festival.

  • Acworth will be part of Cobb County's transit study on light-rail possibilities.

  • The aldermen and mayor will meet at 6:30 p.m. in Conference Room 1 for the alcohol license hearings, then will hold the regular council session at 7 in the council chambers. Acworth Patch will report on the meeting tonight.
