'Covering the Bases' Honored by City

The City of Acworth Mayor and Board of Aldermen praised the efforts of the fundraising committees and the generosity of the citizenry.

The made five presentations to organizations involved with a recent fundraiser and recognized Breast Cancer Awareness Month at their meeting Thursday evening.

The fundraising event helped the city's Horizon Field and Horizon League, a sports complex and sports league built with special needs children in mind (here's  of the impact the field has had). The has been the chief fundraisers for the event, which has gone on for four years.

This year's fundraiser lasted a full 24 hours (Sept. 24–25), and included people walking the bases of Horizon Field for the duration of the event. In addition, the “Ride for the Horizon” and “Shoot for the Horizon” events were launched to raise more money for the Horizon project.

All told, the events raised $23,258.07 for Horizon Field and the Horizon League this year. Police Capt. Tony Bailey presented Aldermen Bob Weatherford and Gene Pugliese with a commemorative check.

“We are really an incredibly giving community,” said Mayor Tommy Allegood. “This just shows you all of the different components of how a community gives back and then creates a tradition.”

Chef got into the giving mood, donating the first $100 to next year's Horizon fundraisers to Police Chief Michael Wilkie.

Members of the Acworth Police Department and local businesspeople were presented with commemorative plaques by Capt. Bailey.

Two female members of the Young Marines were on hand to receive a proclamation recognizing Red Ribbon Week. The Young Marines in turn handed red ribbons to the aldermen and members of the police.

“Our mission as a Young Marine is to promote a healthy, drug free lifestyle,” said Young Marine Kim Brooks. Brooks went on to stress the need to live a drug-free life as opposed to talking the talk.

Additional proclamations were read for Diaper Day (Oct. 24—a day for citizens to donate diapers to families who have to choose between eating and buying diapers) and for National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

The Mayor and Board of Aldermen then passed the consent agenda, with Alderman Tim Houston abstaining on an agenda item which re-appoints his wife to the Acworth Housing Authority.

Notable items on the agenda include:

  • The appointing of a poll manager, two assistant poll managers and the absentee ballot clerk for the .
  • Amending the customer service policy to address after hours reconnect times and days for non-payment accounts. These changes will go in effect on Nov. 1.
  • Hamlin & Co., Inc., will perform negotiations on eight parcels for the Senator Russell Ave. project. The negotiations will cost $7,200, or $900 per parcel.
