Despite Vote Redistricting Maps on Agenda

The state House of Representatives voted a week ago to accept new district lines for . But the issue is on the commissioners agenda Tuesday night.

Commissioner Woody Thompson is upset because Mableton, which was in his district, will now be split into two different districts — his and Commissioner Bob Ott's.

Thompson was joined by Commissioner JoAnne Birrell , in adding a new map to the agenda at the last minute. The new map would keep all of Mableton in Thompson's district.

Birrell told the Marietta Daily Journal that revisions could be made to the map before it is voted on by the state Senate.

said at the Feb. 14, meeting that they would be glad to look at a different map, but only if the public was given notice there might be a vote.

At a recent town hall meeting, Ott said the Democrats are trying to make sure the Republican-led state doesn't re-draw maps to favor the themselves. Thompson is the lone Democrat on the board.

The maps are re-drawn every 10 years following a census. The new map, approved by the House with the support of Reps. Rich Golick (R-Smyrna) and Ed Setzler (R-Acworth), was drawn by legislators with local imput.

In other business Tuesday, the commissioners will hear the final report from the Citizens Oversight Committee. The head of the committee—charged with, among other things, finding if the county could be run more frugally—told the MDJ that there won't be much new to add to the
