POLL: Supreme Court Upholds 'Obamacare'

By a 5-4 vote, the high court ruled that the Affordable Care Act, and the individual mandate as a tax, are constitutional.

The U.S. Supreme Court has voted to uphold the Affordable Care Act, including the controversial provision to require individiuals to purchase health insurance.

By a 5-4 ruling issued Thursday morning the court ruled that the entire health care law is constitutional.

The justices also decided that the individual mandate -- the subject of legal claims by 26 states, including Georgia -- was constitutional if imposed as a tax.

Congress passed the ACA in 2010 with the provision that individuals not buying insurance would pay a fine. It was the focal point of President Obama's effort to expand health coverage to Americans without it, or those who are underinsured.

But the mandate also has been the bone of contention for political conservatives who have vowed to repeal the law, which they call "Obamacare."

Voting with the majority was Chief Justice John Roberts, who normally makes up the court's conservative block. But in his written remarks, he said that the mandate is constitutional as a tax: "Because the Constitution permits such a tax, it is not our role to forbid it, or to pass upon its wisdom or fairness."

U.S. Rep. Tom Price, a Roswell Republican who represents East Cobb in the House of Representatives, said in a statement that the ruling permits "an unbridled attack on personal freedom" and pledged to work for its repeal:

"We have no choice but to exercise every possible legislative option to repeal this disastrous law, and the American people should know that House Republicans will continue to advocate on their behalf to restore personal control over health care decisions.”

The SCOTUS got it wrong. Laugh if you will at the guy writing comments in the Acworth Patch, but I know extortion when I see it. On the one hand it's unconstitutional for Congress to force you buy something, or so say a majority of the Judges...okay, I get that. But on the other hand, if you DON'T buy that same something it's okay for Congress to tax you for it. Now go look up extortion...which is essentially demanding money through coercion. This is a very bad precedent to set. Congress will find ways to use this new tax loophole. Think about it. If you don't go buy a car next year that's okay...but we'll levy a tax on you if you don't. Nice going Judge Roberts, you pretty much screwed us all.

I get the point of passing this...however, it's still forcing A LOT of people into paying more tax for sth that doesn't benefit them, but just so others can have "affordable healthcare". It's always going to be a debate between individual and collective rights. And I'm not sure if this helps Obama's election campaign, especially after all the immigration policies he's pushed forward.

SCOTUS is definitely in trouble for this...not that I don't get it...but it's just crazy that we'll be taxed for something we don't need. Seriously, what's up with politicians not able to come up with laws that actually work???!!! With all do respect, the President was clearly pushing this for many reasons, yes, it is true we have SERIOUS problems with our healthcare system and he wants to do sth about it...but Washington has done NOTHING to make bipartisanship work, and all they do is talk the talk. Yes, there is a problem. Yes, we need to do sth or we'll be in deep trouble. But why couldn't these "lawmakers" come up with some laws that make more sense? Don't give me nonsense like "we can't make everyone happy", you just need to do your job with all the money we pay you to be in the Congress or elected offices, but all these people do is helping out their fundraisers!
