Chatt Tech Honors Nursing Graduates

A traditional pinning ceremony at the Chattahoochee Technical College honored 34 nursing graduates.

A total of 34 students sat before an audience of their family, friends and instructors Saturday as they were welcomed into the world of nursing.

The group, who won’t officially walk across the stage to receive their associate degrees until December, celebrated the completion of the Associate of Science in Nursing Program with a traditional pinning ceremony.

“Chattahoochee Technical College is honored to send such an esteemed class of nursing students into the surrounding communities to provide quality healthcare to those in need,” Dean of Health Sciences Ron Webb said. “The need for qualified nurses is stronger than ever. We are humbled to provide education for talented professionals to the growing field.”

The pinning ceremony symbolizes the rite of passage into the nursing profession with students receiving a pin and lighting a small lamp in honor of the tradition of Florence Nightingale. The pin is a reminder to the 34 graduates of their purpose to serve the sick and infirmed. The lighting portion of the ceremony serves as an honor to Nightingale, who is known as the founder of modern-day nursing. In the 1800s, Nightingale was known as the "lady with the lamp," tending to the sick while carrying a lamp to light the way.

This is the second cohort to graduate from the program, which began at Chattahoochee Technical College in January 2009. The students spend six intensive semesters in the program, following at least one year's worth of prerequisite courses and a competitive selection process. They learn in college labs and classrooms, as well as in clinical experiences at all types of hospital and health care settings.
