Georgia Descends onto Clark Creek For Bus Tour

Clark Creek Elementary STEM Academy in Acworth was the only stop for Cherokee during the Georgia Partnership for Excellence in Education's 21st annual Bus Tour.

Education leaders and community stakeholders across the state all converged onto Clark Creek Elementary STEM Academy as part of the Georgia Partnership for Excellence in Education's 21st annual Bus Tour.

The event, which allowed state business and community leaders to tour select schools in parts of the state, also coincided with the Cherokee County School District's Get On Board! CCSD Bus Tour.

Cherokee's event, the first of its kind, also allowed business and community leaders and elected officials to tour of three schools — Clark Creek Elementary STEM Academy, E.T. Booth Middle and Etowah High schools — in an effort to showcase the various forms of teaching and learning going on in the classroom.

Along with Clark Creek Elementary School, the statewide tour included stops at Calhoun High School, Calhoun City Schools; and Murray County Pre-K, North Murray High School/Bagley Middle School, Murray County Schools.

Those leaders also stopped in and visited the Community Partnership for Dalton City and Whitfield County Schools.

Clark Creek students on Tuesday morning rolled out the red carpet, welcoming their leaders to the school. Principal Dr. Jennifer Scrivner reminded those in attendance that while 55 percent of students at her school qualify for either either free or reduced lunch prices, her students continue to excel at the local and state level.

Clark Creek is one of four STEM — science, technology, engineering and mathematics — academies in Cherokee County. The others are at Ball Ground, Canton and Holly Springs elementary schools. Other district specialized academies include fine arts academies at Oak Grove and Hasty elementary schools.

Scrivner said the Cherokee County School Board had a "vision to establish competitive standards" at the elementary school level, which gave birth to the district's idea to establish these academies. At the elementary school level, that vision means integrating technology to teach Common Core Georgia Performance Standards to her students, she added.

"Technology is really the vehicle you will see (we use) to teach the common core standards," she said.
