Renovations Approved for Baker Elementary

The project is expected to be completed by the end of July, in time for the start of a new school year.

Some long-awaited renovations have finally been approved for Baker Elementary School in Acworth, but the project will cost more than initially indicated.

The Cobb Board of Education last week approved a $3.035 million bid by Merit Construction Co. of Atlanta.

The original proposal was to spend $2.151 million when the current SPLOST III period began in 2010.

Since then, several changes in the project have prompted a cost overrun of $883,506, or 41 percent.

The project will include new furnishings, including marker boards, toilet partitions and accessories and window blinds, upgrades to the schools HVAC system and a new emergency generator and conversion to natural gas.

Asphalt paving, playground equipment, and some technology and audio-visual purchases have been scratched, among other items.

The additional funding will come from the current SPLOST III contingency, and completion of the Baker Elementary project is expected by the end of July.
