Tentative Cobb School Budget Vote Expected

The board of education is scheduled to take an initial vote at Monday's called work session.

After two grueling work sessions, the Cobb Board of Education has scheduled another one for Monday as it faces a deadline for tentative approval of the fiscal year 2014 budget.

A special meeting has been called for 1 p.m. Monday as the school board continues to work to close a projected deficit of $86.4 million.

Monday's work session will take place in the board room of the Cobb County School District headquarters at 514 Glover Street, Marietta. The meeting also will be live-streamed on the CCSD website.

The board is expected to vote for tentative approval, which it is required by law to do in order to advertise a public hearing on the budget.

That public hearing has been scheduled for Tuesday, May 14, at 7 p.m., and final budget approval is slated for May 16.

But the board remains divided on how to reach a balanced budget. Proposed revisions were requested for last Monday's budget work session, but the board couldn't agree to take a tentative vote after several hours of debate.

Board members Kathleen Angelucci and David Banks have been most vocal in resisting deep cuts for teachers (through attrition), assistant principals and other classroom and in-school resources, and advocate spending more than the proposed $22 million in district reserve funds.Β

But colleagues Scott Sweeney and David Morgan side with Superintendent Michael Hinojosa and chief finance officer Brad Johnson against more reserve funding, pointing out that the district faces steep deficits for fiscal year 2015 and beyond.

Among the proposed budget items on the table are five furlough days, a half-year cost-of-living increase; reductions in the central office staff and budget; and requiring direct deposit for all district employees.

The CCSD has developed an informational portal with a video and other budget-related links.
