Girls Advance to Final, Boys Fall

Here are five things you need to know for your Friday.

  • Although it will be mostly cloudy and the high will be 59 degrees, the forecast also holds a slight chance of sprinkles, the National Weather Service reported. Tonight, the temperature will drop to 39 and skies will be cloudy during the early evening before gradually clearing.
  • The Allatoona High School’s girls basketball teams advanced to the championship game of its Lake City Classic Basketball Tournament by beating South Atlanta 42-23. Unfortunately, the boys fell 57-42 to unbeaten Carrollton in a game that didn’t start until 9:15 p.m.
  • The Buccaneer girls hoops team will take its school-best 11-1 mark and play Archer (8-3) at 7 p.m. today in championship of the Lake City Classic Basketball Tournament at Allatoona High School. The 9-3 boys will play Mays (2-7) at 2:30 p.m. in a game that will decide the tournament’s third-place finisher.
  • Tips on avoiding contributing to the spike in underage drinking and alcohol-related accidents over the New Year’s weekend will be available in an Acworth Patch story today.
  • This Day in History: In 1862 during the Civil War, the U.S.S. Monitor sinks in a storm off Cape Hatteras, NC. The ironclad dueled to a standstill with the C.S.S. Virginia (Merrimack) off Hampton Roads, VA, just nine months earlier, History.com reporter. This was one of the most famous naval battles in American history as it marked the first time two ironclads had faced each other in a naval engagement.
