Marion Foundation Seeks Hope for Displaced Women and Children

Acworth resident Kim Layton needs volunteers and funding to continue her mission.

Kim Layton has a mission-but she really needs someone to share it with.

The 56-year-old Acworth resident began the Marion Foundation after seeing a need to house displaced mothers and offer them hope.

An unwed mother herself at 18, Layton said she empathizes with women trying to raise children in a difficult home and economic environment.

The Marion Foundation provides a safe environment at an undisclosed location for displaced women and children in the Atlanta area. The non-profit organization shares a dream to help displaced women know the dignity and positive future of both themselves and their children.

Various resources are supplied to guests at the shelter, including job skills training, counseling, food, clothing, and shelter.

"We anticipate a smooth transition for our guests to independent living and responsible parenting after meeting their pertinent needs, accomplished through a 9 to 18-month program," Layton said.

"I realize I'm not going to save every woman, but I have overcome obstacles and want them to know that they can, too."

Most of the women Layton ministers to have drug or alcohol abuse issues, as well as domestic violence situations.

A meeting with Mother Teresa in 1992 in Decatur changed her life and brought her to Christ, said Layton. That eventually brought her out of a life of alcoholism. She now has three sons—Michael, 38; Peter, 27; and Patrick, 25; as well as five grandchildren.

"It has been quite a journey," said Layton, adding that she needs volunteers to plan a spring fundraiser fashion show in Acworth.
