It's about time. In my opinion the affirmative action ruling has destroyed the higher educationRead More system in this country, A college diploma is not worth the paper it's written on any longer. In the old days the cream was allowed to raise to the top as the saying goes and that way you insured that you had the best. That is what made this country and its educational system so good. Eventually the minorities would have been part of that cream and would become the best of the best.

2 observations: race in my opinion is not a disadvantage. poverty is. and poverty affects people ofRead More all colors--so colleges can take into account challenges in life--but being the son of michael jordan shouldnt grant him an easier admissions process simply because of skin pigmentation. 2) people also need to understand that the system in place does in fact result in diversity that we should all want. New Yrk Times about a year ago ran an article on peter stuyvesant high school--an elite school in manhattan that changed it admission policy to strictly merit. the result was 1 black student 95% asian. 1% hispanic 3 % white. Im not really sure that is a desirable outcome either. going to college is not just about attending bio 101. its interacting with a diverse student body that can also be considered an education. Colleges should not in my opinion adopt a strict meritocratic admissions process--- hardship , poverty, challenges should be considered. I get why people dont want racial preferences-- but i also get why people may regret what they wished for.

BTW - wine was drunk back then as a way to purify - through fermentation - as they did not have theRead More many purification systems that we are so blessed with today. No need to drink alcohol today; nothing positive can possibly come out of it. And, if you drink alcohol you may cause another to slip. Jesus turned water to wine at a wedding. A wedding between a man and a woman.

Sorry about you brother, Aids is from the HIV virus, like a lot of other viruses it shows no mercyRead More to humans. Most people who have died from Aids globally are heterosexual so I don't quite follow your reference to your brother. God did not punish your brother with Aids, nor women with breast cancer, nor those with Hepatitis C, nor most every man over age 70 on this planet with prostate cancer. He caught a virus, and about 40,000 die each year from car wrecks. Again, sorry about your brother, but I don't understand your way of thinking. Peace to you and your family.

Misinterpreting scripture and using The Bible as a weapon against Christianity is the ultimate Sin.Read More When you rely on the government to give you rights, then they can just as easily take them away. I can easily prove that I am a black woman, where is your undeniable proof that you are gay?
Everyday Mathematics is just one of the programs that makes a heck of a lot of $ off of the millions of textbooks sold to schools that teach to the 'Core.' The Common Core isn't just restricting for teachers & students, it's lining people's pockets.

This is all about money and has nothing to do with what is good for our children's education - thatRead More is why it was crammed in quickly (many people still don't even know what it is) with the "carrot and stick" method. The carrot was the $4.3 billion of Race to the Top (taxpayer) money from the Federal Government and the stick was the waiver of the No Child Left Behind requirements. To learn more you can visit this Facebook page, which was made by some local parents: Northville MI Parents for Educational Excellence StopCommonCoreinMichigan is also a very helpful site. As people come to realize what this truly is (vs. what it was sold as, "minimum standards"), they are speaking up all over the country. By the way, tests that kids struggle with do not necessarily mena the material is harder and that the standards are better. Please read the tests - you will find politically charged questions, questions that are inapropriate for the children's age and confusing questions. The person that wrote above that the childen will lose in this way is absolutely correct.

The heart of the problem is the teachers union. The teachers are not doing a good enough jobRead More teaching and the kids are falling further behind. So we try to fix the problem with centralized standard, which will end up controlled by Washington. Politically correct, 1984 style, Ministry of Truth, will re-write revisionist history, and indoctrinate our youth. The problem is bad, and the fix is worse. We need to abolish teachers unions and abolish the US dept of education. Grant the parents school vouchers, and then let the parents and communities choose how to run their schools. Let the parents decide with their vouchers which schools are good. Let the cancerous schools die. Let the Phoenix rise from the ashes and build new schools free of unions and bureaucratic control.

Funny how Netflix is the "bad boy" yet those that offer more commercials than the movieRead More itself are just fine :) Cable today is pure garbage, a 2 hr movie will last half the night with all those commercials and since all sports from all countries, could be seen live over the internet...cable is obsolete. Netflix is weak but is a fine alternative to cable for now. (as for news, please, you must be brain-dead to get your news from cable...with all of them all over you from second you start the computer to turn on the radio to even the second you "check" the e-mail on the phone. so Reuters don't worry about Netflix, worry about cable companies whose stocks should be worth a little more than half an ounce of dirt

I call a spade a spade Laura. That's the problem. People are so afraid of "judgement".Read More Let's not hurt anyone's "feelings". Believe me. Dorie, stowing away on a plane is a crime. And no, the boy himself did not pose a threat. But theRead More fact that he (anyone) can get that close to a plane poses a threat. I have to take off my flippin' shoes and get patted down, but apparently you can just walk up and plant a bomb in the wheel well.

I agree with B. Dub 100%! How was this kid able to scale a fence and just walk right over to theRead More plane? TSA: for all the harassing you do in the terminal...you ain't all that!! As far as the kid being a runaway..maybe he does face some serious abuse issues at home. He's damn lucky to be alive. But, I raised three boys, and a 16 year old boy can runaway for any collage of reasons. My kids never ran away but, I'm wondering if the fact that the plane was going to HAWAII has anything to do with it. It sounds a little compulsive to me. CPA need good follow up on this. Thank you lucky stars kid!

Agranon - I'm a moron because I am tired of everybody and his mother trying to put themselves inRead More every story? Then so be it - I'm a moron. To be honest, I am also really tired of all the people that were compelled to run the Boston Marathon because "I had to finish for all those who couldn't." Get over yourself. It was a tragedy. Those responsible should be ripped apart by dogs. I sincerely hope the families of those affected can move on somehow. But how does Mary Jane Smith running the marathon help ANYBODY but herself? She's not doing it for "those who can't". She's doing it to maybe get on TV and she's probably feeling a little sanctimonious because she ran 26.2 miles and you didn't.
