Pro Wakeboard Tour Takes Over Lake Allatoona

The 2012 MasterCraft Pro Wakeboard Tour kicks off Friday in Acworth.

It's going to be a weekend packed with action and fun on the lake. Acworth will kick off the 2012 MasterCraft Pro Wakeboard Tour on Friday, and an estimated 8,000 spectators will flock to Dallas Landing Park in the next two days to watch some of the world's best wakeboarders compete in the tour. Friday's action on Lake Allatoona starts at 8 a.m. and runs till 6 p.m. It will feature qualifying rounds and is free to the public. Saturday will be a ticketed event beginning at 10:30 a.m. Tickets are available at the gate: $13 (adult); $5 (ages 6-12); free (ages 5 and under); or $7 (adult) if purchased online. Atlanta Hawks Basketball Camp Coming to Acworth

The camp is for boys and girls ages 7-16

The Atlanta Hawks Summer Basketball Camp will make a stop at Allatoona High School, June 11–15 from 9 a.m.- 4 p.m. The camps are open to boys and girls ages 7-16, and, according to the Hawks' release, "offer a high-energy opportunity for young players and fans to improve their skills, play the game, meet friends and have fun." Features of the camps include Atlanta Hawks guests and trainers, a 2012-13 regular season Hawks game ticket and Hawks gear, the organization said. The cost for each camp is $200. Acworth to Kick Off Wakeboard Tour

Enjoy a weekend packed with actions and fun on the lake.

An estimated 8,000 spectators will flock to Dallas Landing Park in Acworth on May 18-19 to watch some of the world's best wakeboarders compete in the 21st season of the MasterCraft Pro Wakeboard Tour. The newest boat MasterCraft XStar, which has been a staple of the wakeboarding scene since 1996, will also debut at the Acworth stop. The 2013 XStar comes in weighing nearly 1000 pounds more than its award-winning predecessor and sucks in up to 2600 pounds of ballast. If you are looking for fun sports activities for your kids this summer, consider Canongate Golf’s PGA Junior Golf League for children 13 and under. In part of the PGA’s national program, Canongate Golf, which owns 23 golf clubs throughout Georgia, is hosting teams at its Bentwater Golf Club in Acworth. Designed to better socialize the game for boys and girls, the League features a scramble format against other area golf clubs in a structured league that provides a popular, less stressful format than medal-play competition. A New York Times story headlined "Big Price Tags Attached to Even the Littlest Leagues" looks at the big business of equipping youngsters for participation in youth baseball and softball leagues, quoting those costs and more. "A batting helmet protects tiny heads for $39.99," the Times reports. "A pair of Nike Jordan Black Cat cleats will make your child fast and fashionable at $51.99 until he or she outgrows them."

My son plays ice hockey in the south. With not a lot of competition between rinks ice time is very expensive. $250 for a bat that is nothing put them in hockey gear head to toe not even close. Skates can run up to $600. I didn't even mention a goalies family buying hockey gear that takes it to a whole another level. Acworth Golfer Wins National Award

Harrison High alumnus James White of Acworth was named the co-winner of the 2012 Byron Nelson Award on Thursday. White, a member of the Georgia Tech golf team, shares the award with Dylan Frittelli of Texas. The award goes to a college senior—or, in this case, two college seniors—based on academics, golf career, character and integrity. Good citizenship is a key factor because the winner must emulate Byron Nelson, according to the announcement from the Golf Coaches Association of America. The GCAA hands out the Nelson Award with Cleveland Golf/Srixon, the Four Seasons Resort and Club Las Colinas, the Salesmanship Club of Dallas and Friends of Golf. Chatt Tech Basketball Coach Named Region Director

David Archer is currently in his first season as assistant men’s region director of the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association.

Chattahoochee Technical College athletic director David Archer was unanimously voted in as the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association men’s region director for the 2012-13 athletics year. Archer, who also coaches the men’s basketball team at Chatt Tech, is currently in his first season as assistant men’s region director of the GCAA. “It’s going to carry more responsibility with the GCAA and its member teams,” said Archer in a press release. “I also welcome the challenge of working more closely with the NJCAA.” The previous men’s region director, Charles Mullis of Middle Georgia College, will be vacating his position on July 1 as MGC begins its merger with Macon State College and exits the GCAA.
